Ticino Turismo: The Scientific Method in Support of the Cantonal Destination

Project partner

CHALLENGE

Monitor destination health in real time

The Ticino Tourism Agency (ATT) is responsible for the tourism marketing of the entire Canton of Ticino. The project, launched in 2022, involves 8 shareholders directly: the Canton, the 4 Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs), and 3 fundamental trade associations: Hotelleriesuisse Ticino, Gastroticino, and the Ticino Campsites Association.

The client's need was to provide the territory with a Hospitality Data Intelligence tool capable of dynamically monitoring the performance of hotels and campsites.

The objective was twofold: to support individual establishments with pricing strategies and to provide tourism bodies with reliable data for strategic decision-making, overcoming reliance on delayed statistical surveys.

SOLUTION

An Integrated Observatory for the Canton

The solution implemented by HBenchmark stands out for its integration with the academic research system:

The HBenchmark platform has become the primary source for the Tourism Observatory (O-Tur) of the Institute of Economic Research (IRE) and the University of Italian Switzerland (USI). This enables high-profile quantitative and qualitative analyses of local tourism demand.
The system aggregates data from approximately 115 establishments, offering strategic information on both past stays and future bookings, with specific monitoring for areas (Mendrisiotto, Luganese, Bellinzonese, Lake Maggiore).
Thanks to the work with Hotelleriesuisse, individual establishments benefit from anonymised and aggregated benchmarking, which is essential for improving business performance in a competitive market like Switzerland.
RESULT

Data Culture and Territorial Synergy

The project, which constantly involves over 110 establishments, has transformed Ticino into one of the most advanced destinations in tourist data management.

The ability to publish timely reports on major events or festive periods allows institutions to communicate with authority and individuals to adopt best practices based on real comparisons, ensuring the sustainable growth of the sector over time.
